Peru, IN – Detectives from the Peru Police Department conducted a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of West 6th Street at approximately 9:18 p.m., Monday, June 11, 2018, as a part of a drug investigation. According to Peru Police Department Detective Jeffrey Grant, the investigation began as a result of citizen tips about suspicious activity at the residence over a period of time.
Officers conducted the search at the home of Raymie Smith, 49 of Peru. Upon arrival at the residence, Mark Weaver, 23 of Logansport was located on the front porch along with two individuals whose names were redacted from probable cause affidavit obtained from the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office. These individuals were handcuffed and secured on the front porch while a search of the residence was conducted.
Inside the residence, Detective Matt Feller located Darren A. Garling, 50 and another person whose name was also redacted from the report. Feller reported that a “one-hitter pipe” was located in Mr. Garling’s pocket.
Several syringes were located with the assistance of one of the occupants of the home. Detectives learned that the syringes belonged to Mr. Weaver. In an interview conducted later, Weaver stated that he had been staying at the residence and admitted to using methamphetamine as well as observing others use the drug.
In an interview with Garling, he admitted that the pipe found on him was his. He also reported using marijuana and also to having seen the use of methamphetamine at the house.
Raymie Smith was not home at the time of the search warrant but was located later by patrol officers and brought to the Police Department for an interview. During his interview, Smith said that he has lived at the address on West 6th Street for seven years. He admitted having used both marijuana and methamphetamine at his residence. He also stated that the room where the syringes were located was being occupied by Mr. Weaver and Mr. Garling and that both had used marijuana and methamphetamine in the residence.
Raymie Smith, 49 of Peru was arrested by on a charge of Maintaining a Common Nuisance.
Mark Weaver, 23 of Logansport was arrested on a charge of Visiting a Common Nuisance and Possession of a syringe.
Darren Garling, 50 of Peru was arrested on charges of Possession of Paraphernalia and Visiting a Common Nuisance.
All criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
