Peru, IN – The Peru Board of Public Works and Safety met on Tuesday, May 15th in the City Council Chambers. In a very light meeting, the Board approved a request from Harvesting Capabilities, Inc. to sell alcohol at their annual chili cook-off at the Peru Riverwalk on West Canal Street.
The board heard from Christina Gornto of Harvesting Capabilities who requested some changes to the previously approved event. The location will change to the west end of the park closer to the Riverview Event Center to accommodate the Community Foundation’s Anniversary event to be held the same day. Smitty McMusselman’s Pub will be serving alcohol at the event and will secure all the necessary alcohol permits needed from the state. Gornto also wanted to request the use of shelter house #9, just west of Miami’s Fort for the event. The board approved the requests by a unanimous vote.
In other business, the Board of Works:
- Approved the payment of City Claims in the amount of $78,751.55
- Approved a request from Gary Working of the Apostolic Revival Center on Wampler Street for a crosswalk from the church building to a building across the street used for youth ministry. The Street Department will donate some used safety cones for the church to use as well as painting a crosswalk at a nearby intersection with a stop sign for the kids to use to cross the street.
- Approved a request from Peru Fire Department Chief Erick Hawk for a road closure of West Canal Street in front of the Fire Station on June 10, 2018. This will be for a car show/
- Approved a request for a Road closure from Todd Wolfe of the Peru Traffic Department on behalf of the Military Rites Honor Guard Memorial Day Service on May 28, 2018. North Broadway Street between Main Street and 5th Street will be closed for about one hour beginning at 11:00 a.m. for the service. Mr. Wolfe will notify the businesses on North Broadway that could be affected by the road closure.
With no additional business, the board approved a motion to adjourn. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Peru Board of Public Works and Safety will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018, at City Hall beginning at 5:00 p.m.
About the Board of Works:
The Board of Works consists of the Mayor and two members appointed by the Mayor. The Clerk-Treasurer is the Secretary of the Board. Authority includes control of street & sanitation as well as traffic. The Board’s function also includes control of law enforcement and fire safety, although the mayor appoints the police chief, fire chief, and city engineer to handle day to day responsibilities for their respective departments. Appointed members serve a four-year term.
